Old Southwest Cougar hunts are what we specialize in.A lot of you know about the cougar hunting giants of old times, Ben Lilly, Dub Evans, and the Lee Brothers. Well they knew how to have the most exciting hunts and we have learned from their experiences how to hunt the magnificent cougar. Below you will find a story with pictures of a hunt we had recently, we are hoping it will give you an idea of what you can expect and look forward to. |
We trailer our horses and hounds to a place that we have scouted and have found tracks , scrapes or kills that are fresh. We unload and head into that area, not knowing what lies ahead, but hoping we will trail and catch a cougar today. |
| We got lucky today and have been trailing for a few hours. The hounds are hot and thirsty and with luck we found water for them to cool off in and get a very needed drink. | |
We got back on the track . Within 30 minutes it got really exciting; the hounds jumped the cougar! In just a matter of minutes the hounds were out of site and hearing. Old Luke saved the day; he is old and slow and was left in the rear, but helped us find the right canyon to go up and mountain to go over. We finally got to where we could hear the dogs below us. We dismounted and walked over to see if we could see the hounds. Look at the site we saw! |
The cougar is laying on the edge of the bluff with the hounds right in his face. They are about 300 yards below us and it is really wicked country between the hounds and us. Billy slowly climbed down the mountain to get to the cougar and hounds. The rest of us took the horses around to a ridge that would get us into the canyon below. Billy got to the hounds about 45 minutes later and was able to get some pictures before the harvest. |
The hounds are greeting Billy as he approaches; they want him to see what a good job they've done knowing they'll get praised for.I don't think the cougar feels the same way! But after the chase he has been given, he decides to take a little nap. The knap didn't last long , the hounds made sure of that! The cougar decided he had better look for a way out |
It's rough below , with about a 100 foot drop. But getting nervous at the situation, the cougar started to jump off the bluff. The kill was quick. It took Billy about another hour to get the cougar and the hounds down in the canyon. We rode up just as he lifted the last hound off the last bluff into the canyon. |
Now the work begins and we have to get him loaded on to one of the horses. Luckly we have lots of muscle power to get him on the horse. We make sure that we love and praise the hounds for doing such a fantastic job! Loaded we are ready to head back to the trailer. |
So you see we don't need snow to have a great hunt. If we hunt on snow it's only because it's there. I hope you will come and hunt with us, we would love to show you why Southwest Cougar hunting is our passion. It's the hunt, not the kill that you will remember the rest of your life!! |
